So this is how it went down. A great friend and director I'd worked with for years was making a film to enter into Tropfest. The story was great and now that I think back on it, it was way ahead of its time in parodying just how far a dedicated hipster will go to get the best coffee, like, ever.

The catch was that I only had 24 hours to score the whole film because you know, deadlines. But what made this film so fun and so easy was two things: it had a strong sense of identity about itself and its sense of humour. And the director said one sentence to me, only one, when giving me my brief:

"Let's take Raising Arizona south of the border."

Sometimes with just the simplest of elements like that, the smallest piece of communication... when the message is clear, it took no effort whatsoever to know exactly the how what when and where for the music in this film. So the 24 hour turn around - ok it meant having to pull an all-nighter, but it came out so easily and was so much fun to do that the time just flew by.

It was just some pretty unexpected icing on the cake when we won best original score for this film.  For me it's a pity it didn't win best comedy because it was definitely the film which got the most laughs by far.  Happily though, the film did go on to win Best Comedy Film at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival shortly thereafter, so its charms were finally recognised after all.

All in all it was a fantastic experience and I'll always have the fondest memories of working on this little gem of a comedy. I'd never been to an outdoor film festival this big before (or since), with 70,000 people picnicking in the park just to watch short films, the atmosphere was electric. And when I had to go up to collect a prize, I was so nervous that I'm pretty certain I forgot to say thanks to Serge for trusting me with his great little film, or even to say thanks to anyone at all. So, uhh.. 10 years too late but, thanks!
